CHARLOTTE, NC – September 5th, 2008 – The With These Hands Mix DJ Academy (WTH) is proud to announce the addition of DJ Chuck T as its official spokesperson. The Charleston , SC native will use his widespread influence throughout the Carolinas and within the Entertainment Industry to bring much needed attention and support to the non-profit organization’s goal of “Spining Dreams Into Reality, One Beat At A Time.â€
The Charlotte,NC based organization aims not only to teach the craft and history of the DJ culture, but also to provide a positive outlet for inner city kids in a time where the city has seen a rise in gang activity and violent crimes. Founded in 2006, the academy teaches students ages 12-18, in groups of twelve over the course of twelve-week semesters. Courses on the art of mixing, scratching, blending, reading music, and harmonic music mixing are taught at the ImaginOn Theater and Library in Downtown Charlotte. The Academy also offers lessons on the use of vinyl, CD Turntables, and the use of new DJing software and technology. During the 2008-2009 semester the WTH DJ Academy will also foray into music production.
“There’s still a lot more ground we have to cover in order to really get the Academy to where we would like it to be,†says Founder and CEO Claude Whitfield, who created WTH to fill the void he encountered as a young aspiring DJ himself. “Right now we’re funding the academy out of our own pockets, small sponsorship funding, and through generous donations from people in the community. We would like to get some corporate sponsors on board which will allow us to facilitate a learning experience that will change the lives of today’s young people. ”
In addition to his position as company spokesperson, DJ Chuck T will also sit on the DJ Advisory board and teach the new “Mixtape 101†curriculum. The self-proclaimed “ Carolina King†and “Lord and Savior of Mixtapes†will teach aspiring DJs the history of the mixtape game, how to properly make a mixtape, and the different styles of mixtapes that can be made.
“I was amazed that someone with such a positive reputation and industry clout like Chuck T would ask to be apart of DJ Academy in such a large capacity,†remarks WTH Instructor and COO Louis “DJ 300†Wilson. “When we initially approached him about working with us, it was just to help us out as a judge for our DJ Battle competitions and stop in a talk to the students every once in a while. We’re glad that he’s now an official member of the team not just as an instructor but as a spokesperson.” “Helping Claude and Louis with the DJ Academy is a dream come true for me,†adds DJ Chuck T on his new position. “A lot of older and more established DJs don’t want to help the younger generation of DJs because they feel like they’re training their replacements rather than investing in their own futures. They bash the younger generation of DJs for not having skills rather than trying to teach them the fundamentals. I went through a lot of that in my beginning stages and being able to prevent that from happening to others is definitely a blessing.”
With These Hands Mix DJ Academy will open the 2008-2009 semester on September 13. The Imaginon Theater and Library is located at 300 E. 7th Street in Charlotte , NC . The academy will also open up a satellite program at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte , NC next year for students 18 yrs. of age and older. Last year the academy received the prestigious NACO award for Charlotte/Mecklenburg County, which is an award that is given to the city’s most innovative community program.
